A Half-Eaten Packet of Salted Peanuts Left in the Glove Box
Dear Delyara, I cleared out the car today for the first time in months, pulling old receipts, broken charging cables, and parking stubs out of the side pockets. In the back of the glove compartment, I found a crushed packet of salted peanuts, half-eaten, the plastic twisted over to keep them fresh. I can’t even remember when I bought them—it must have been during some long, exhausting drive when the hunger hit before I could find a proper service station. Holding that tiny, crinkled bag made me feel an odd wave of tenderness for my own past self. We live through these little moments of minor desperation, finding small ways to keep ourselves going, completely forgetting about them the moment the crisis passes. I didn't throw them away; I put them back in the dark, a tiny monument to a random Tuesday when a handful of salt was exactly what it took to get home.
