A stranger paid for my groceries and I cried in the car
Dear Delyara, I was at the checkout, already doing the quiet internal panic of adding everything up before it was finished, when my card didn’t work the first time. Then the second time. There were people behind me. I could feel my face getting hot. I started taking things out of the bags — fruit first, then coffee, then the nicer bread I had already known I shouldn’t have let myself want. The woman behind me stepped forward and said, very calmly, “Please stop. I’ve got the rest.” I said no. She said, “I know.” And then she paid it. It wasn’t even a huge amount. That somehow made it more unbearable. I went to the car, shut the door, and cried so hard I had to wait before driving. Not only because I was grateful. Because I had been trying to carry my life with so much dignity and restraint for so long that the sudden kindness of a stranger cut straight through all the effort. I still think about her. Not because she saved me financially. Because for one humiliating, human moment, she made me feel less alone in the world.
