A stranger paid the difference at the till and my body reacted as if someone had briefly taken the world off my shoulders
Dear Delyara, My card didn’t go through at first. Then again. It was not a huge amount. That somehow made the humiliation sharper. I started removing things quietly. Fruit first. The better bread. Coffee. That little careful supermarket triage women learn when money is tight and dignity is trying very hard to stay standing in public. Then the woman behind me stepped forward and said, very softly, “I’ve got it.” I tried to refuse. She shook her head and did it anyway. I got to the car and cried. Not only because of the money. Because I had been carrying so much with such discipline that one stranger’s ordinary kindness reached me exactly where I had gone rigid trying not to show strain. I still think about her. Probably because what she gave me was larger than groceries for one afternoon. She gave me back my sense that the world is not entirely hard.
