A stranger sent me photographs of my husband with a child I have never seen

Dear Delyara, My husband died eighteen months ago. Yesterday, an unknown woman messaged me three photographs. In them, my husband is holding a little boy who looks about five. In one photograph, the child is asleep against his chest. The woman wrote only, “I think you deserve to know.” Then she stopped responding. I have never seen the child. My husband and I were married twenty-two years. We had no children because he said he never wanted them. I have spent all night enlarging the boy’s face, comparing his eyes to old photographs, searching dates and locations in the background. One picture was taken during a weekend my husband told me he was attending a conference. I do not know whether this child is his son, a relative I never heard about, a friend’s child, or something else entirely. My husband cannot explain. Death has left me alone with evidence and no cross-examination. I loved him. I buried him. I defended our marriage when people told me grief romanticizes the dead. Now three photographs are asking whether I knew the person whose hand I held while he died.
