GratitudeActs of Kindness

A woman in the queue made my embarrassed child feel normal again

Dear Delyara, He had dropped something, gone red, and that awful public-shame energy was building fast in him. Before I even had time to manage the situation, the woman behind us smiled and said, “I do that all the time,” in such an easy, ordinary voice that his whole body softened. I could almost see the humiliation leave him. That kind of kindness is so precise. It costs almost nothing and protects something precious — dignity in the moment it’s about to collapse. I thanked her, but even while I did I knew the real gratitude was deeper than the sentence allowed. I wish more people understood how powerful gentle normalising can be.
