The SilenceTrauma

Certain sounds still throw me backward before I can reason with myself

Dear Delyara, A slammed door. A sharp male tone. A cupboard shut too hard. Silence after my name. That is enough some days. My body gets there first — the tightening, the alertness, the old animal readiness that arrives before the rational part of me has caught up enough to say: this is not that room, not that year, not that danger. I know all of that intellectually. The body does not always care. That’s what I wish people understood about trauma when it survives into ordinary life. It does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it just looks like a woman standing in a kitchen, going quiet for three seconds, then continuing with dinner as if nothing happened while her entire nervous system has already run a private emergency drill in silence. I am tired of history having that much access to the present. But it still does.
