The SilenceTrauma

Certain tones still make my body smaller before I understand why

Dear Delyara, I wish trauma were always obvious. Sometimes it is anything but. Sometimes it is only a tone. A pressure in the room. A certain sharpness, unpredictability, or emotional angle that my mind cannot yet name but my body already recognizes. Then suddenly I am quieter, flatter, more careful, more watchful than present. From the outside, it could look like composure. Inside, it feels like reduction. That is one of the loneliest things about living with old fear. The reaction can be so internal and so immediate that there is no clean moment where I can say: here, this is it, this is the exact second I left myself a little to stay safe. And yet I can feel it. I still can.
