The WeightDebt

Debt has entered the way I think about my own comfort

Dear Delyara, I do not only budget differently now. I want differently. Or rather, I want and immediately move to cut. The better shampoo becomes unnecessary. The coat can wait. The shoes still “work.” The appointment can be delayed. Lunch can be skipped. The good pillow is too much. The massage is absurd. The easier option is indulgence. The practical option is virtue. I have watched debt teach me that I am the first and easiest place to subtract from. That is not only financial pressure. That is emotional training. And I am tired of it. Because the truth is, the body remembers every subtraction. And one day a woman realises she is living inside a life made meaner by a thousand tiny denials she no longer even questions automatically. That is where I am trying, slowly, to stop.
