The WeightDebt

Debt Has Made My Voice Smaller

Dear Delyara, I can hear it in myself now. The quicker yes to things I can’t afford because I’m too ashamed to say no in the moment. The too-fast apology at the register. The way I say, “We’re being careful right now,” instead of the truer sentence, which is, “I am scared all the time.” Debt doesn’t just live in numbers. It changes your tone. Your posture. Your willingness to want anything before calculating the cost. It trains you to sound grateful for less. To act casual while carrying panic in your ribs. To make normal family life feel like an endless series of negotiations with reality. I’m tired of how humble money fear has made me sound. Not humble in the good way. Smaller.
