Debt Has Started Making Me Feel Smaller in Shops Than I Used to Feel in My Own Life
Dear Delyara, I notice it in my body. The way I hold things before buying them. The speed with which guilt enters ordinary choices. The way a till can suddenly feel exposing. The private shame attached to wanting anything that is not strictly necessary. The fact that “strictly necessary” itself has become such a hard phrase in my mind now. Debt does that. It does not only cost money. It alters posture. Dignity. The emotional size of a person inside ordinary life. And what hurts most is how quickly I now cut from myself first. How natural it has become to reduce my own comfort, ease, care, and small joys before the conversation has even had time to become a conversation. That is not financial management. That is the emotional training of scarcity. And I can feel it changing me in ways I do not want.
