Every test is normal, and I am still in pain
Dear Delyara, For two years, pain has moved through my body without leaving evidence doctors can name. It begins behind my ribs, spreads into my back, then disappears for days before returning. Blood tests are normal. Scans are clear. One doctor suggested anxiety. Another recommended yoga. My family has stopped asking how I feel because the answer never changes. I continue working, cooking, attending school events, and smiling through conversations while something inside me burns. The absence of a diagnosis has made people doubt the presence of the pain. Sometimes I doubt it too. I press my fingers into the sore places until I leave marks because bruises are visible and pain is not. Last week, my husband said, “Maybe focusing on it makes it worse.” I know he meant to help. I went into the bathroom and cried with the water running. I am not only afraid of being sick. I am afraid of spending the rest of my life hurting in a way that never becomes official enough for anyone to believe.
