Family conversations can leave me feeling more edited than spoken to
Dear Delyara, I say the acceptable version, the manageable version, the version that won’t invite ten follow-up questions or one long lecture or that look people get when they think your feelings are becoming inconvenient. I know how to do this well now. Too well. Then I come home and feel strange. Not exactly silenced. Edited. That is one of the hardest things about family dynamics in adulthood. You can be technically talking the whole time and still leave with the sensation that the real version of you remained in a locked room the entire afternoon. I don’t always know how to undo that feeling once I get home. Sometimes I just carry it to bed.
