Finding a Box of Old Cassette Tapes and Mourning the Person I Promised I’d

Dear Delyara, I was moving some storage boxes in the loft tonight and found an old shoe box filled with cassette tapes from my teenage years—band rehearsals, rough guitar tracks recorded on a cheap boombox, and late-night rants I’d spoken into a microphone when I was eighteen. I listened to one track, and the sheer, unpretentious confidence in that kid’s voice completely broke my heart. He was so certain he was going to make something beautiful, so sure he wouldn't let the world grind him down into a standard nine-to-five existence. I am forty-two now, I haven't touched a musical instrument in ten years, and I spend my days managing logistics schedules for an insurance company. I feel like I’ve completely betrayed that boy’s trust, trading every single one of his dreams for the sake of a regular mortgage contribution.
