He came to the hospital even though we had not spoken

Dear Delyara, My closest friend and I stopped speaking after a bitter argument about money and loyalty. Eight months passed. Then I was admitted to hospital with a serious infection. I had not listed him as an emergency contact, but someone told him. He arrived at three in the morning carrying my phone charger and the old sweatshirt I always wore when ill. He did not ask whether the argument was over. He sat beside the bed and complained about the vending-machine coffee as though no time had passed. We apologised later, carefully and without pretending the hurt was trivial. What mattered first was that he came before knowing whether he would be welcomed. Friendship is often praised for comfort, laughter, and history. That night, it looked like a man entering a hospital room where he had every reason to remain absent and placing a charger beside the bed because he remembered my phone was always dying.
