He learned how to love me without asking for the old body back

Dear Delyara, Cancer treatment changed my body permanently. Surgery removed one breast, medication changed my weight, and intimacy became painful for a time. I expected my husband to reassure me by saying nothing had changed. He never said that. Instead, he asked what felt different, what hurt, where I wanted to be touched, and when I wanted him to stop. We went months without sex and learned other ways of being close. He never described patience as sacrifice. Last weekend, for the first time after treatment, we spent the night away together. I stood in the hotel bathroom looking at my scar and nearly put my clothes back on. He knocked and asked whether I wanted company. I said yes. He came in, sat on the closed toilet lid, and talked to me about the terrible hotel artwork until I laughed. Love did not restore the body I had before cancer. It helped me stop believing my changed body required an apology before it could still be wanted.
