The BondFriendship

He made peace with everyone except me before he died

Dear Delyara, My best friend had terminal cancer. During his final months, he contacted people he had fallen out with, apologized to an ex-wife, reconciled with his brother, and even invited an old colleague he had hated for years to visit. He never resolved things with me. We had argued six months before his diagnosis because I accused him of borrowing money and lying about why. He stopped speaking to me. When I heard he was ill, I sent messages. No reply. I asked his sister whether I could visit. She said he was not ready. Then he died. At the funeral, I watched people describe his final months as a time of forgiveness. His brother said he “left with nothing unresolved.” I wanted to stand up and say my name. I did not. Maybe he had every right not to forgive me. Perhaps I was wrong in ways I still do not understand. What hurts is that death closed the argument while leaving me alive inside it. Everyone else received a final version of him. Mine ends with a message marked read and no answer.
