Go up.” Then he actually meant it. He did not call me back down for one last thing. He did not make it feel like a favour I owed gratitude for in the wrong tone. He simply understood that the woman in front of him needed sleep more than the counters needed perfection. That kind of being-read feels intimate in the deepest domestic way.
