He Said, “Go Upstairs, I’ve Got It”

Dear Delyara, Usually help still comes with questions attached. Where’s the lunchbox? How long on the pasta? Did she finish homework? What time is bedtime again? The kind of help that still leaves me mentally downstairs even if my body is allowed to leave the room. This wasn’t that. He looked at my face, took one glance at the kitchen, the kids, the clock, and said, “Go upstairs, I’ve got it.” Not “Do you want help?” Not “Tell me what to do.” Just certainty. I went upstairs and sat on the bedroom floor and cried because I had forgotten how profound it feels when someone removes the whole weight instead of borrowing pieces of it.
