He sat outside my door for seven hours

Dear Delyara, During a severe depressive episode, I stopped answering everyone. My closest friend came to my apartment and knocked. I texted him to go away. He replied that he would not enter, call the police, or force me to talk, but he was going to sit outside until I agreed to contact my therapist. For seven hours, he remained in the hallway. He ordered food and left half beside the door. Occasionally, he sent a message about something ordinary: a dog he saw, a terrible song playing from another flat, the fact that the carpet pattern was making him dizzy. Near midnight, I opened the door. He did not hug me or say I had frightened him. He handed me the phone and sat on the floor while I called the crisis line. That night led to treatment, medication changes, and weeks of support. Yesterday marked one year since then. I invited him for dinner and served the same food he had left outside. He joked that it tasted better indoors. I am alive partly because he understood that staying beside someone does not always mean crossing the door they are not ready to open.
