My Diary

I almost cried because the washing smelled good

Dear Delyara, Not because I am unstable. Because I am tired. I was bringing the clean clothes in from the line and that warm, sun-and-powder smell hit me, and for a second the whole pile felt less like a task and more like evidence that something in the day had gone right. The weather held. The clothes dried. They smelled like care. There are weeks when success gets measured that strangely. I stood there with a towel over my arm and realized how long it had been since I felt any uncomplicated satisfaction. Most things lately arrive mixed with cost — the meal with the washing up, the family visit with the emotional recovery afterward, the work task with the anxiety before it, the school event with the forms and timing and parking. But the laundry smelled clean, and nobody could ruin that moment for me. I let myself enjoy it. I think I needed a victory that didn’t ask to be interpreted.
