I Am Angry in Ways They Would Never Recognize

Dear Delyara, My family would probably describe me as patient. That’s because they don’t know what my anger looks like. They think anger is raised voices, visible confrontation, sharp exits. Mine is quieter. Mine is the silence after I decide it isn’t worth explaining myself again. Mine is emotional distance. Mine is knowing exactly why something hurt and not saying it because history has taught me it will only become another argument about tone. I think some of the angriest people are the ones who have learned to make it look like composure.
