I am beginning to dread ordinary life

Dear Delyara, It isn’t the big emergencies that wear me down most now. It’s the endless ordinary. Petrol. School shoes. Groceries. Prescriptions. A birthday present. The washing powder running out. A child needing money for something they forgot to mention until the last minute. A bill. A form. A card machine. A small repair. Nothing catastrophic. And yet I can feel my whole body tighten around each one because there is no room left around the edges. No buffer. No emotional margin. That’s what financial pressure does over time. It teaches a woman to fear the normal architecture of daily life. To hear need as cost first. To hear cost as threat. To hear threat before breakfast and carry it into every room all day in quieter language. I miss neutrality around ordinary spending. I’m not sure I even remember what it felt like.
