The WeightDebt

I am frightened by how much debt has changed the tone of my home

Dear Delyara, The debt is not only on paper anymore. It lives in my body. It’s in the way I hear the post come through the door. It’s in the way I open the banking app with my jaw already tight. It’s in the way ordinary spending now feels morally loaded, as if every supermarket trip contains a tiny courtroom where I have to justify what a family is allowed to need. I hate what it has done to my voice with the children. They ask for something small and I answer carefully because I don’t want them to hear the fear beneath the sentence. I hate what it has done to my marriage too. Even kindness starts getting strained when money is pressing against the walls of every conversation in invisible ways. It’s not catastrophe. That’s almost what makes it harder. It’s chronic pressure. No room. No margin. No clean exhale. Just the ongoing humiliation of trying to make a squeezed life still feel ordinary for the people you love. I’m tired of acting calm while money keeps entering every room before I do.
