I am frightened by how much money now changes the emotional climate of my home
Dear Delyara, I used to think financial stress was mostly about numbers. Pay this, delay that, figure out the rest. I understand now that it is much more invasive than that. It gets into tone. Into sleep. Into appetite. Into marriages. Into the speed with which a woman says no to herself before anyone else has even entered the conversation. I can feel it changing me. It makes me more guarded. Less generous. Quicker to panic about ordinary costs. More likely to hear a child’s request as a problem before I hear it as a child being a child. It has made me dread things that should be neutral — the post, the checkout, birthdays, school letters, car noises, the phrase “we need to get…” I am tired of how much emotional power money has over the atmosphere of a house, especially when the people you love most are the exact people you are trying not to let feel it too fully. That act of concealment is exhausting on its own.
