I Am More Afraid of Public Failure Than I Am of Staying Unhappy
Dear Delyara, I can stay in something that hurts me for too long if it remains respectable enough on the outside. A job I have outgrown. A life that is smaller than I want. A routine that no longer feeds me. A self that feels tired, delayed, postponed. What terrifies me more is being seen trying and not becoming. Applying and not getting it. Starting and not sustaining it. Leaving and then regretting it visibly. Reaching for something bigger and discovering, publicly, that I was not enough. That fear has become very clever with age. It no longer sounds like fear. It sounds like timing, maturity, responsibility, realism, protecting the family, waiting until things are better, making the sensible choice. Some of those things are true. But not all of them. A lot of it is still fear in a better coat. I know it. That is part of why it’s painful. Because self-awareness does not automatically create courage. Sometimes it only makes the delay feel more humiliating. And yet I still delay. That is the part I can no longer hide from.
