The PlotFear of Failure

I am more frightened of public failure than I am of private unhappiness

Dear Delyara, That is such an ugly truth. And I think it explains too much of my life. I can remain quietly dissatisfied for years if the dissatisfaction is respectable enough. A dull job. A thinning marriage. A smaller life than I want. A body moving through routines I no longer fully believe in. I can survive all of that and still look responsible. What terrifies me more is visible effort that does not pay off. Trying, applying, launching, speaking, reaching, choosing myself publicly and then not becoming what I hoped. That fear has become so well-dressed now. It sounds like realism, timing, responsibility, maturity. It tells me to wait until the conditions are better, until the children are older, until the money is steadier, until I feel more certain, until I am somehow magically less vulnerable to disappointment. I know it is fear. It still persuades me.
