The PlotFear of Failure

I am more frightened of visible failure than of the quiet pain of staying too small

Dear Delyara, I can live beside my own dissatisfaction for a long time if it stays private enough. A job I’ve outgrown, a life that feels narrower than I want, a self that keeps postponing her own becoming. All of that can continue under the cover of responsibility and “making it work.” What terrifies me more is being seen trying and not becoming. Reaching, applying, starting, leaving, risking, and then having public evidence that I wanted more and didn’t manage to build it. So fear dresses itself up as maturity. And some days I let it. I know that. That’s part of why it hurts. Because this is not ignorance anymore. It is self-recognition with very little room left for pretending I do not know what I am doing when I delay.
