The PlotFear of Failure

I am not only afraid of failing — I am afraid of being seen failing at this age

Dear Delyara, If I were younger, I think I would let myself try more freely. Now every new beginning feels crowded by consequence. Money, age, family, timing, pride, history, how it would look, how public it would feel if I reached for something bigger and fell short in front of people who already have fixed ideas about who I am and what my life is. So I hesitate. Then I call the hesitation realism. Then I hate myself a little for it. I’m starting to understand that fear of failure becomes more socially sophisticated with age. It stops sounding like panic and starts sounding like responsibility. That makes it harder to fight, because part of it is telling the truth. Risk does cost more now. Still, staying costs more than I admit too. I know that. I still freeze.
