The WeightDebt

I am repaying a training loan for a qualification the regulator no longer accepts

Dear Delyara, I borrowed £14,000 to complete a professional course that was supposed to qualify me for better work. Six months after I finished, regulations changed. Employers now require a different accredited route. My certificate is not worthless, exactly, but it does not unlock the jobs I was promised when I enrolled. The loan remains very real. I pay £286 every month. I still work in the same role I had before studying, only now I have less money left at payday. The training provider says the course met standards at the time. Legally, they may be right. Financially, I feel conned by timing. My partner asks whether I will do the new qualification. I cannot imagine borrowing again. Yesterday, a new colleague asked why I never applied for promotion because “you’re obviously qualified.” I laughed and said it is complicated. I have a framed certificate in the spare room that I cannot look at without seeing direct debit dates.
