I am selling the jewellery my husband gave me so he does not know we are struggling

Dear Delyara, My husband lost his job six months ago. He is trying desperately to find another and already feels ashamed. I have been covering bills from savings, but the savings are almost gone. I have begun selling my jewellery one piece at a time without telling him. First earrings I rarely wore. Then a bracelet. Yesterday, I sold the gold chain he gave me on our tenth anniversary. He noticed tonight that I was not wearing it and asked why. I said the clasp broke. He offered to take it for repair. I told him I had already dropped it off. Another lie. I am not selling because he would stop me selfishly. He would be devastated that gifts he worked years to buy are becoming groceries and rent. I tell myself I am protecting his dignity. Sometimes I think I am protecting mine too. I have always been the organised one, the woman who says we will manage. If I tell him the account is nearly empty, I have to admit I no longer know what “manage” means. My jewellery box is becoming lighter while my husband keeps searching job websites at the dining table.
