I am tired of acting calm about money in front of the children
Dear Delyara, I don’t want them to carry my fear. That is the whole problem. So I keep my voice level. I say maybe later. I say we’ll see. I say not today. I say let’s wait. I say things in a normal tone while my stomach is doing private calculations that they are too young to be responsible for and old enough to begin noticing anyway. I hate that money has entered motherhood like this for me. I hate standing in shops making quick decisions with a smile on my face while feeling the weight of the month pressing on my chest. I hate hearing my children ask for something small and immediately translating it into what else must be cut. I hate that I sometimes look at ordinary family life and see numbers first. And I especially hate that part of my parenting now involves disguising financial fear in a voice that sounds steady enough not to frighten the children before bed. That is a lonely way to carry money. Not only because it’s hard. Because I have to perform calm while holding it.
