I Am Tired of Acting Calm About Money While My Whole Body Is Quietly in Alarm

Dear Delyara, The hardest part of money stress is not always the actual numbers. Sometimes it is the acting. Acting normal when the children ask for something ordinary. Acting thoughtful rather than frightened in the supermarket. Acting patient when my husband mentions a cost I know is real and necessary and still cannot emotionally absorb without my chest tightening. Acting as if adult life is merely “busy” instead of admitting how financial pressure can colour the entire emotional atmosphere of a family. I don’t think people understand how much labour there is in not passing money fear into the room too directly. I do the filtering all day. I translate panic into practicality. I swallow dread and answer in a normal tone. I cut from myself first because it feels easier than letting the whole house feel the edge of what I’m carrying. And still, the body knows. It knows when I check the bank app with my jaw already tight. It knows when I hear a child’s request as cost before I hear it as childhood. It knows when I stand at the till and feel humiliated by the ordinariness of what money has made emotionally heavy. I am tired of carrying this in a face that still has to look responsible.
