I am tired of debt living in my chest before breakfast
Dear Delyara, It gets there before the kettle does. The numbers are not only in the bank app anymore. They are in the first thought of the morning, in the quick mental calculations at the supermarket, in the way I hear the post come through the door, in the private flinch every time a child mentions needing something next week. That is what debt has done to me. It has moved from paper into physiology. I hate how much of my emotional life now gets shaped by trying to stay one step ahead of ordinary life becoming unaffordable in yet another small humiliating way. I hate how quickly I now say no to myself before anyone else in the house even knows a choice is being made. I hate how I am still trying to sound calm for the children while my mind is already editing the week into what can be postponed, cancelled, stretched, softened, or sacrificed. It isn’t only financial pressure. It is constant emotional narrowing. That is what exhausts me most.
