My Diary
I answered too sharply and hated myself for it
Dear Delyara, My daughter asked something ordinary. I answered in a voice she didn’t deserve. Nothing huge happened after that. She looked at me, went quiet for half a second, then moved on because children often do. I did not move on. Because I heard it. That edge. That tired hard sound that comes when I have been too touched by the day and the bill arrives in my tone before my values can catch it. I apologised. I meant it. And still I carried the shame like a stone for the next hour. I think one of the most painful parts of motherhood is not the large mistakes. It’s the tiny leaks of depletion that children feel immediately and mothers remember long after the child has forgiven them.
