I asked for help before the thoughts became an emergency
Dear Delyara, During previous depressive episodes, I waited until I was in crisis before telling anyone. I believed asking earlier would make me dramatic. My therapist helped me create warning signs: stopping meals, ignoring messages, sleeping in daytime, and thinking my family would be better without me. Last month, those signs began returning. This time, I told my husband the same day. I contacted my psychiatrist, reduced work temporarily, handed over medication that needed safer storage, and used the crisis plan before I reached the point of being unable to make decisions. Treatment was adjusted. The episode did not disappear, but it did not become the emergency previous ones had become. Today, I returned to work part-time. The victory is difficult to explain because nothing spectacular happened. That is exactly the point. I asked for help while I could still participate in choosing it. For years, I thought strength meant surviving the edge. Now I know it can also mean recognizing the road before I reach it.
