I asked for the raise instead of waiting another year to be quietly worthy

Dear Delyara, I have spent most of my working life hoping my effort would eventually speak loudly enough that I wouldn’t have to. That sounds noble. In reality, it mostly meant being underpaid while staying polite. This month, after taking on more responsibility, training new staff, and carrying work that had clearly moved beyond my current salary bracket, I booked the meeting and asked directly. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it. But I did it calmly, clearly, with evidence, and without apologizing for needing the conversation to happen. I haven’t had the final answer yet, but I already feel different. There is a kind of dignity in not waiting to be discovered all the time.
