I asked the hotel to remove the minibar before I arrived
Dear Delyara, Business travel had always been dangerous for my sobriety. Empty hotel rooms, expense accounts, and minibars made relapse easy to hide. After treatment, I avoided travel for a year, but a promotion required a conference abroad. My sponsor and I created a plan: daily calls, local meetings, no evening networking alone, and a request to remove alcohol from the room before check-in. Writing that email felt humiliating. I imagined staff judging me. Instead, the hotel confirmed the minibar would be empty and offered a list of alcohol-free options. During the conference, colleagues drank late into the night. I left after dinner, called my sponsor, and watched a terrible movie in my room. This morning, I woke sober and delivered the presentation I had travelled to give. Recovery was not proving I could resist a full minibar through strength. It was arranging the room so that a tired, lonely version of me did not have to perform heroism at midnight.
