I ate in a restaurant after eighteen months on a feeding tube

Dear Delyara, Cancer treatment damaged my swallowing so badly that for eighteen months most of my nutrition came through a tube. Food became something measured in milliliters, delivered by syringe, disconnected from smell, plates, conversation, and appetite. Rehabilitation began with tiny spoonfuls of thickened liquid while a therapist watched every swallow. Then purées. Then soft food. I coughed, became frightened, and sometimes wanted to give up because eating had become work instead of comfort. Last week, I was cleared to try a full soft meal outside home. My husband booked the Italian restaurant where we had our first date. I ordered risotto. When it arrived, I stared at it for so long the waiter asked whether something was wrong. I took one small mouthful and swallowed safely. Then another. Halfway through, my muscles were tired and I stopped. There was food left on the plate. Months ago, I would have called that failure. My therapist had taught me otherwise. I had eaten dinner in a restaurant with my husband. We talked about our neighbour’s terrible fence and our daughter’s new job instead of discussing calories or tube feeds. I kept the receipt. It says two meals. Seeing those words made me cry in the car because for eighteen months I had been fed, but that night I ate.
