My Diary

I ate standing up again

Dear Delyara, At some point I need to admit that this is not a random bad habit. It is a pattern. I stand at the counter with half a sandwich or a quick plate or something reheated badly because sitting down properly feels too official, too interruptible, too likely to invite one more request before I’ve even finished chewing. Standing lets me remain slightly unavailable, slightly in motion, slightly less owned by the room. That can’t be healthy. It is very common. Tonight I caught myself doing it and thought, this is what domestic life has trained into me — eating like a person who expects to be needed before the plate is done. Usually I am.
