My Diary

I ate the children’s leftover pasta and resented how natural that felt

Dear Delyara, Not because I’m above leftovers. Because I realised how easily my own meal had once again become whatever remained after everybody else had been fed. It wasn’t a conscious sacrifice. That’s what unsettled me. I didn’t heroically choose less. I simply drifted into less, which is how so much self-neglect seems to happen in domestic life. Quietly, practically, under the name of efficiency. I stood by the hob eating lukewarm pasta from the pan and thought, this cannot always be how I arrive in my own evening. The sad part is, it often is.
