Small JoysHobbies
I baked without turning it into content or a performance
Dear Delyara, I used to love baking before everything became useful. Then somehow even hobbies started getting measured — Is it healthy? Is it pretty? Can I photograph it? Can I take some to school? Is it productive? Is it worth the mess? Yesterday I made banana bread just because I had overripe bananas and wanted the smell of something warm in the house. I didn’t photograph it. I didn’t try to perfect it. I didn’t even use the good loaf tin. The children cut uneven slices while it was still too hot and got crumbs everywhere. It was one of the nicest hours I’ve had in weeks.
