I became a paramedic after being the cleaner at the ambulance station

Dear Delyara, I cleaned an ambulance station at night for six years. I knew crews by name, heard stories after difficult calls, and quietly envied the work while believing university was for people with different lives. One paramedic kept telling me I should apply. I laughed at him for two years. Eventually, I completed an access course, studied around shifts, and entered training in my thirties. I failed one clinical assessment and nearly returned permanently to cleaning. I tried again. Today, I completed my first shift as a registered paramedic from the same station. The cleaner working tonight asked whether I used to work there. I said yes. During my break, I walked past the cupboard where my old mop bucket used to be kept. Career success has not made cleaning work smaller. It taught me that the job I started with was not evidence of how far I was allowed to go.
