I became head chef in the restaurant where I once washed dishes

Dear Delyara, I started at the restaurant at seventeen washing dishes because I had left school and needed money. I barely spoke to the chefs. Over time, I learned prep, then sauces, then service. I took courses on my days off and worked kitchens elsewhere before returning as sous-chef. Today, the owner announced I am the new head chef. After service, I went downstairs to the dish pit where I started. The same metal sink is still there, though almost everything else has changed. I remembered my first night, hands red from hot water, convinced everyone upstairs belonged to a world I would never enter. Career success did not happen because somebody discovered hidden talent. It happened through thousands of onions, burns, corrections, humiliating mistakes, and showing up again the next day. I touched the edge of that sink before leaving tonight. Then I went upstairs and wrote tomorrow’s menu under my own name.
