I became the supervisor at the factory where I first worked through an agency

Dear Delyara, I started at the factory through a temporary agency after arriving in Britain. My English was limited, and for the first year I understood instructions mostly by watching other people. I worked nights, took language classes during the day, then completed safety and management qualifications one by one. Some colleagues still remembered me as “the agency lad” long after I became permanent. Today, the company confirmed my promotion to shift supervisor. I will manage twenty-three people, including two men who once told me migrants never stay long enough to learn anything important. I do not intend to make their lives difficult. That would make the promotion about them. I called my mother after signing the paperwork. She asked whether supervisor means I can sit down more. I laughed and said probably not. Career success has not erased the years of being underestimated. It has simply made those years part of the route instead of the destination.
