My Diary

I bought birthday wrapping paper and felt weirdly emotional about adulthood

Dear Delyara, Not because of the paper itself. Because I stood there choosing between dinosaurs, blue stars, and something “more grown up” for a child who is somehow no longer small enough for me to know the right answer instinctively. I think these are the moments that get me now. Not the obvious milestones. The little shopping decisions that show you time has been moving without asking permission. One minute you are buying cartoon paper for children who think all parties are magical. The next you are standing in aisle seven trying to estimate whether twelve is still young enough for balloons on the print. I brought the paper home, wrapped the present badly, and sat for a minute with the scissors in my lap feeling older than I had that morning. Parenting doesn’t only age you through stress. Sometimes it ages you through subtle astonishment.
