My Diary

I bought reduced bread and pretended it was a choice

Dear Delyara, I know that sounds bitter. Maybe it is. I picked up the yellow-sticker loaf, checked the date, did the maths in my head, and told myself it was sensible. Practical. Fine. There’s nothing wrong with reduced bread. Lots of people do it. All of that is true. Still, the emotion attached to it was not neutral. Because sometimes money doesn’t wound through lack. It wounds through repetition. Through the constant small ways you adjust, cut back, choose down, call it practicality, and keep moving. Each individual moment is survivable. It’s the accumulation that gets into dignity. I brought the bread home, put it on the counter, and wished very briefly that one part of adult life didn’t always have to feel like negotiation.
