The AwakeningSelf Love

I Bought the Better Shoes and Finally Admitted That Repeated Small Pain Is Still Pain

Dear Delyara, I had been wearing the old pair far too long. They weren’t destroyed. That’s how I justified it. Still wearable, still decent-looking, still “fine.” Meanwhile, every afternoon I could feel them in my back, in my hips, in the tiredness of the walk to the car, in how short my body’s patience with the rest of life became after being held slightly wrong for hours. And yet I kept calling that practicality. This week I stopped. I bought the pair that actually supports me. And walking home in them, I felt two things at once — relief and a sharp sadness at how trained I had become to tolerate daily discomfort when the discomfort belonged to me. That’s what made this more emotional than it should have been. It wasn’t only about shoes. It was about permission. About stopping the habit of making my own body the place where budgets, pressure, and practicality always cut first. That feels like self-love to me now. Not a slogan. A better pair of shoes.
