My Diary

I bought the wrong toothpaste and nearly cried in the car park

Dear Delyara, It was the children’s one. The one they hate. I had gone in for five things, remembered four, chosen the wrong fifth, paid too much for all of it, and by the time I got back to the car I was furious with myself in that horribly disproportionate way that only happens when the mistake is small and the rest of you is already overfull. I didn’t cry properly. Just that hot, stupid, humiliating pressure behind the eyes that says this is not about toothpaste at all. It was about being tired of being the one expected to remember all the little right things. The correct toothpaste, the preferred cereal, the PE day, the signed form, the birthday card, the bus pass, the appointment time. Tired of how one small domestic failure can suddenly feel like evidence that you are dropping balls no one else even sees you holding. I sat there with the shopping bags beside me and breathed until the feeling passed. Then I went home and made dinner anyway.
