My Diary

I burned the onions because I was still thinking about a conversation from noon

Dear Delyara, That is how my mind works now when it is overfull. The body is in one place, doing one practical thing, and some part of me is still back in a different room replaying a sentence, a tone, a look, an email, the thing I should have said, the thing I wish I hadn’t said, the version of myself that behaved correctly, the version that might have been braver. By the time I smelled the onions, they had already gone too far. No one else thought much of it. I did. Because it wasn’t about dinner. It was about how often I now live several emotional hours at once. Home, work, fear, memory, tomorrow. They all sit down together in me and then I wonder why I’m tired before bed.
