The AwakeningSobriety & Recovery

I called my sponsor before I called the dealer

Dear Delyara, I am recovering from cocaine addiction. Three months ago, after a terrible argument with my brother, I sat in my car with my dealer’s number already typed. My thumb was over the call button. For years, that sequence had been automatic: pain, anger, number, drug, shame. This time, I called my sponsor first. I said only, “I’m about to use.” He stayed on the phone while I drove to a meeting. I hated him for the first ten minutes. Then the craving changed shape enough that I could get through the night. Today, I have eighteen months sober. People focus on the number, but I keep thinking about that one phone call. Recovery did not make me stop wanting drugs whenever life hurt. It gave me another number to dial before the old one. I deleted the dealer’s number eventually, but I know I could find it again if I wanted. Sobriety lives less in not knowing the route and more in choosing a different turn while the old road is still visible.
